Beauty salons in the gun over teeth bleaching - The Age- Topic: Laser Dentistry
THE battle for the right to give people dazzling Hollywood smiles is set to erupt, with Victorian dental authorities preparing to take on the beauty industry in court. The move — the first of its kind — comes as more beauty salons offer customers teeth bleaching, a procedure that uses potentially dangerous chemicals and has traditionally been performed by dentists and dental hygienists. The Dental Practitioners Board of Victoria, which regulates dentists, plans to prosecute a beauty practitioner in the Magistrates Court in about two months’ time. Under the Health Professional Registration Act, only people who are registered as dental care providers can perform an “irreversible procedure” on teeth or manage “conditions of the mouth of a person”. The board has no authority over the beauty industry but intends to launch the private prosecution in the public interest. The president of the Australian Dental Association, Mark Bowman, said teeth bleaching was highly regulated in England and Europe but in the US it was difficult to find anyone who hadn’t had their teeth whitened.
